Forty Pounds of Wet Corn: Colorado, day four

I am operating in the future, trying to get back on track so I can blog the prior activities of the day before bed time. Here's to hoping I get caught up this evening, but as I sit here and type I find myself getting exceptionally sleepy.

Alright, so this is covering day two of our trip, where we went to Hanging Lake. And I mean. If we're talking about starting trips off with a bang as a way to determine the calibur of the trip...this trip is going to be a fucking disappointment for everyone but my dad. The dark horse of the day trip to Hanging Lake.

The drive up to Hanging Lake was very, very nice. It's a gorgeous drive, we all sat and chatted and had a nice time. About 45 minutes from the trailhead, we got stuck in a traffic jam because the 70 was closed for reasons. We drove down the grassy, hilly median and turned around, stopped at a gas station to pee and fume, and then took a different way to skirt around the traffic. We arrived to Hanging Lake right on time, got fantastic parking, got our shit together and made our way to the trail. It was such a gorgeous day!

The gorge on the way to the trailhead.

Obviously an ussie to start our journey. I didn't wear my keffiyah on the trail, I didn't want it to get ruined. And a fucking good thing, too.

The beginning of the trail! It was such a beautiful day, I was so excited to get going and make it to the top. The last time I did Hanging Lake was right after I broke my arm. Fairly immediately after, actually. My arm was still in a sling, and I hadn't really expected to do the hike due to my arm being freshly broken, so I wore flip flops. Derek and I made it to maybe the 5th bridge...he said the 4th when I asked him...before I was like, I don't know that I can make it, it really hurts my arm and I am not prepared sartorially for this journey. So Derek left me at a lovely, shady bench by a waterfall and I agreed to wait for him until he was done doing the hike. I'm not even sure he was gone fifteen minutes before I was like, "fuck this shit" and made my way up to the top, broken arm in a sling and flip flops on my feet. I made it to the top, which is definitely a feat in the state I was in, but I didn't get to take any photos, and the hike up is truly so fucking gorgeous that I wanted to go back with a camera and a tripod and take as many breaks as I wanted, in hiking boots and with two operational arms. When we landed on going to Colorado, one of the first things I said we had to do was Hanging Lake. I am still absolute TRASH at landscape photos, they are not my strongsuit. I can take a good one sometimes, but mostly I just take barely adequate landscapes, as will be obvious when I shitpost all of them after we get home from the trip. Anyway.

Here is Derek, getting ready to ascend ascend ascend! I stopped here to take a video of the first waterfall to send to the kids, and Derek fucked around with his cameras. Cameras plural. I would learn in about twenty minutes that he did not pare down his gear, he brought at least two bodies, both long lenses, the 180 macro (which is very heavy), and his tripod. For those of you playing the home game, that's a lot of very heavy gear. Derek and I are used to humping a shit ton of gear on hikes. We always have people stop us to marvel at our gear, ask how much we're carrying, and people always react with surprise when we tell them how much extra weight we're carrying up whatever moderately strenuous hike we're doing. I know I usually get a bit of a thrill out of that when it happens. I'm like, "what a special little beebee am I to be carrying all of this when most people seem to be struggling to carry their water!!" I suffer from main character syndrome a lot.

I was moderately worried about doing this hike, just because it was the first full day here for my dad and Caryn, and it would involve some strenuous activity with a 1100 ft elevation gain, and there was not a lot of time to adjust to the altitude between arriving and hoofing it up a big ass rock. I knew I could do it, I knew Derek could do it, but I was worried about my dad and Caryn. Well. I should have been more worried about Derek. We hadn't even made it an eighth of the way up before Derek stopped three times, looking more fuckin' raggedy with each resting break. After the third, I was like, "excuse me, sir, but no. No more". Derek protested a LOT, but even Caryn was like, uh...no, Derek, you do not look like, your color is off you're sweating buckets, you need to turn around. Caryn went ahead while I argued with Derek about whether or not he was, in fact, staying behind.

He ended up going back down.

I moved ahead, and honestly I was feeling pretty fucking great. I hadn't remebered the layout of the trail, and it was a lot more steps thaan I recalled from doing it the first time. When I saw the trailhead I was like...oh no. Maybe I should have been doing thirty miles a day to prepare instead of 10, PLUS doing this at altitude?? I was concerned. But I felt great. I wasn't breathing hard, I didn't have a headache, I was drinking water every time I stopped with Derek, I was feeling really good. I caught up with Caryn, and she told me she was going to head back down, her knees were hurting her and she was at her limit. I told her where to find Derek, and to not let him out of her sight because he could not be trusted to not push past his limits. And up I went. My dad was still heading up, and was about fifteen minutes ahead of me, so I texted him that Caryn was heading back down, Derek was already back down, but I was heading up to meet him. We agreed to meet up with each other, and he figured he wouldn't wait because I was a faster hiker and he was needing a lot of rest, so we would meet up eventually.

Another bridge! I took another video here for the kids, sent it to Rhyann because I still inexplicably had signal, and kept going.

I stopped at this petrified looking stump (as in turned to rock, not scared, though I can't speak for the log, maybe it WAS terrified) because Derek had tightened my camera bag straps to my body so fucking ttight that I could not god damn move, and I was having a panic attack. It took me two minutes to wiggle out of the straps. I sent Derek a message that said, "my straps are too tight". I fixed them, had some water since I was stopped and figured it couldn't hurt, and then started back up.

I passed by this gorgeous little fall, decided it wasn't what I wanted to photograph but I DID want to send a video for the kids, so I took a tiny video, sent it to Rhyann, and was getting ready to make my way forward when I noticed a pretty intense pressure building in my face. I texted Derek that my sinus pressure was intense, and it felt like my eyeballs were going to explode out of my nose (almost an exact quote). I moved along, but then saw these two kids just grabbing rocks and chucking them into the river and I was annoyed. This is disruptive behavior to ecosystems, and I was really angry about it. So I yelled, "HEY, LET'S NOT THROW ROCKS, IT'S DANGEROUS AND DISRUPTIVE". The person I am assuming was their dad, but was clearly their supervision, waved at them and was like, "oh hey, careful throwing rocks". I made my way past them, annoyed and thinking about what I would say to them if I saw them again on their way up and the kids started throwing rocks again. You know that socially anxious/ND thing where you just practice winning arguments in your head? I was doing that. For making an excellent verbal takedown...of children. I'm amazing.

My face started absolutely pounding. Just wrenching pain. And then I felt something dripping out of my nose. I figured it was snot, since I had noticed an uptick in my allergy symptoms when we got to Colorado, so I put my finger to my nose to wipe it away...and it was blood. And I could feel it getting ready to gush out of my nose, so I pinched my nose, found a bench, and then leaned over the bench and just let my nose gush. For about ten minutes, I was just leaking like a faucet. Blood all over the place. And just as I had been practicing my harsh word for the rock throwing shitheads, I began to hope they would cross my path on their way up so I could be like, "THIS IS WHY YOU DON'T THROW ROCKS!!!!!" When I said this to Derek, he laughed and said it really was a shame that they didn't see my nosebleed. I wouldn't know it until later, but they were on their way down, not on their way up.

When my nose finished gushing, I used my water to wash away as much of the blood on the ground as I could, texted Derek and my dad that I had a nosebleed and I was going back down, and then hated myself for having Von Willebrand's Disease. It's pretty much why I made myself stop ascending. I figured I had lost a lot of blood, and I didn't know that I wouldn't have another nosebleed. I had been telling Rhyann before Derek and I left that I had suffered nosebleeds fairly consistently when I first moved out to Colorado. One every couple of weeks. And they were bad nosebleeds. I was worried I would have one or two while we were here, and I had chatted with Derek about that, too. I gave myself a little pep talk that if I had any nosebleeds, I would chill out whatever it was that I was doing and take it easy for the rest of that day. So I did. I made my way back down, grumbling and fucking angry about my stupid fucking body and my stupid fucking nose.

Derek and Caryn were at the same little picnic area that we stopped at on the way in, and Derek was still upset about me forcing him back down. He wouldn't talk to me and was just looking for cool rocks, of which he came home with a pocketful.

Derek, Caryn, and I made our way back to the car, grabbed our lunches from the cooler, and had a picnic while we waited for my dad to make his way back down to us. We sat in very pleasant weather enjoying the scenery and our lovely lunches for about two hours before my dad made it back down. He's the only one of us who made it to the top, and I won't lie, I was fairly certain that, if the party broke up due to physical circumstances, it would be me who made it. I wouldn't have guessed my dad alone in a million years. Good thing I didn't put money on that.

We got back in the car and drove the three hours back to Denver. We had planned on making bulgogi that night, so Derek and I were like, YUSSSSSSSSS, time to go to GW Market!!! We had been super excited to check it out since seeing it a few days before.

We were unprepared for the glory.

LOOK AT THE ENTRY. We knew we were in for a fucking shopping treat the second we walked in. Literally, the entire time we were walking around the store, we were like, this is it. We found our neighborhood. If I get the PhD program I'm applying to, this is the neighborhood I want to live in. So many great looking restaurants, this grocery store plus another few grocery stores in the same vicinity...we were in a paradise the likes of which we haven't even dared to dream about.

We were greeted with an amazing quick eats section.

AND THE BUNS!!!!! So many buns. But the bun section could not possibly hold a candle to THE FUCKING VEG.

OH MY GOD. The mushroom selection? Premium. The eggplant selection? Choice. The cruciferous veg? Drool-worthy. Derek and I were so fucking excited the entire time

And then my vegan reading comprehension was tested. If it's imitation vegetarian steak, is it...is it real meat? HELP ME I AM VEGAN AND DUMB.

And then the seafood section was INCREDIBLE.

...who is she.

We were spending way too much time grabbing everything for bulgogi, but we needed to explore this immaculate heaven on earth. There was an entire other half of the building we hadn't yet explored. And it's where they housed all of the bowls and flatware and mostly non-edibles.

I wanted to buy these for my dad, I thought he would like them. He barely chuckled at them when I showed him the picture.

...sounds...illegal?

And look! The supermarket has games!!!

Derek and I really wanted to grab these, but decided not to. For reasons yet understandable to me.

I have no idea what this bowl was trying to tell u s, and I was so mystified that I wanted to buy it. But I will go back for it another time to unravel its mysteries.

This was my favorite little guy. Again, I did not buy it, because we were trying to get the fuck out of there. By the time we got out of there, it was already 8:15. I still had to stop at a dispensary for my dad and we were still supposed to marinate the bulgogi for an hour. Given that, and given that we were all hungry, we decided to get Seoul BBQ. I ordered it, stopped at the dispensary, and then we picked up food and headed back home.

We were sure in for a treat when we dug in to the food.

I didn't realize I had ordered fried yakimandu, but it doesn't quite matter, everyone reported them as delicious.

I didn't have time to fuck around with figuring out what everyone actually wanted, so everyone got dolsot bibimbap. It's fine, they all loved it.

Derek said the japchae was pretty good, but that my japchae is better. He may have said it's just because the egg I make is better, but I will still take better.

The banchan was GREAT. The radish? SPECTACULAR.

Ok so, in Chicago, Derek and I got this amazing kimchi pancake and I have been chasing the taste of it ever since. This kimchi pancake was damn fucking close to the one I got in Chicago, and I think the only thing that held it back was it was take out and not crispy. The taste was divinity.

This veggie pancake was great, too. Very onion forward, but also so mellow. It tasted like spring.

And then we all hung out for a bit and went to bed.

It is June 3rd, I am still a day behind. I am about to leave for the camera store, then the botanical garden, and then who knows? My dad wanted and easy evening, so hopefully tonight I can get caught up. Our next day trip is to RMNP, with mixed success.

Forty pounds of wet corn: Colorado, day three

There's something I've noticed every single time I travel that I don't think people talk about enough:

When you travel, you find out what your clothes and home really smell like.

I opened up my suitcase last night and I was like, ".....I do not like this iteration of home smell." I mentioned this to Derek, how when you travel, it gives you the chance to smell what you smell like on a regular basis, because you're surrounded by unfamiliar smells, and it really clarifies your general scent.

He did not know what I was talking about. I told him I want to wash our clothes again, because our clothes smell a little bit like mildew, and he was like, "well yeah, my laundry stayed in the washer for a couple of days before I put them in the dryer."

Girl.

Rude.

Now I smell like his dumb mildew clothes. I will wash my clothes tonight, I fell asleep last night without doing laundry, but I will not let that happen again. In fact, I may put them in the washer after I write this little blurb.

So today is day three technically, but full day one.

Our bed is so fucking uncomfortable. I woke up with a stabbing pain in my shoulder blade, scrunched up against my forever hot man piece. Only one of those things was a problem. I woke up wanting to have my toast, and finding no fucking toaster in this mug. Pretty upsetting. Derek said he would go buy a cheap toaster, so I made myself some coffee and sat down to blog while I waited for him to come back.

My coffee was fucking gross. I bought a different kind of Torani sugar free syrup, I am guessing that was my first mistake, and my second mistake was trying Three Trees vanilla almond milk. I bought Chameleon Cold Brew, a very reliable favorite. I will say while I went on a fucked up spending spree at Sprouts, my No Thanks App was not working, so I have no idea if I bought shit on my no-fly list or not. The all over point is I hated my coffee, it tasted like splenda and made my mouth and tummy angry. So I dumped it and opted for a sugar free Red Bull.

Today we pick up my dad and Caryn, and we go to MEOW WOLF. I am so fucking excited. I have been horned the fuck up to go to MeowWolf for years, and as a sidenote it is worth mentioning that my dad told me a few months ago that he was "horny for the colorado trip" and that was when I realized how off putting that phrase is?

So I am currently waiting for Derek to come back from his errands so I can make my toast, and then we will go pick up my dad and Caryn, and come back here, and fucking go to MeowWolf. The day of my god damn dreams.

Edit:

We are now technically on day four of our trip, FULL day three. It is about 8am and I am up having my coffee while everybody else still sleeps. It's the perfect time to catch up on my blog.

Ok, so MEOW WOLF.

I don't know how long I've been waiting to go to MeowWolf. It's been a long time. I want to say about ten years? I think I caught wind of MeowWolf in about 2014, and I was like, oh fuck, that's the place for me. And I think I heard about it after Derek andI were in New Mexico to shoot a wedding, and I was gutted that I missed it. I've been trying to plan trips around getting to MeowWolf, but it just hasn't worked out. Until now.

So on Thursday, we go to pick up my dad and Caryn from the airport. Derek and I are at the townhouse, having a light little snacky snack, minding our business and expecting to leave in about twenty minutes to pick them up, when I get a text from my dad saying, "just landed". Well fuck. Derek and I throw our shit together and get in the car, heading off to pick them up, take them back to rest for a bit, and then get going to fuckin' MeowWolf. On the way to the airport, we notice that Denver proper is just god damn lousy with hail from the previous night's storm:

Cool.

Derek and I had been marveling on the way in that the mountains did seem awfully snow packed for End of May/Beginning of June. More on that later.

The traffic coming out of the Denver airport was fucking ridiculous. Derek and I could not for the life of us figure out why it was so jam packed. We picked up my dad and Caryn, suffered through the unexplainable traffic to get back to the AirBnB, changed, relaxed for a few minutes, and then herded ourselves back into the car to head to MeowWolf.

I don't even know where to begin with MeowWolf. I have no idea what I was expecting, but it somehow exceeded expectations and failed to rise to the occasion? I think I was somehow expecting the materials to be less...chintzy? A word I just looked up because I didn't know its origins and I wanted to make sure it wasn't one of those words like "gyp", with all kinds of nasty roots that we shouldn't be using, but we don't know where the word comes from because we just adopt words that we are socialized to use without understanding where they come from. Chintz, in case you're curious, is a Hindi word used to describe fabric. Cool!

Anyway, the materials looked kinda cheap, but like, it's also all local artists making everything and what kind of veneer should I really be expecting? The overall effect is fucking fantastic. I took a billion photos, but I'm only going to pot half a billion.

Obviously Derek and I had to start with our usual ussie Derek is wearing his "Jesus is coming, open your moth" shirt, and he got so many compliments on it.

I took a selfie, but I look like a tired ol' bitch. Which, if I'm being honest...I am.

In the elevator to Convergence Station!!

Derek said this reminded him of Stranger Things, I can see it.

This was my favorite part of MeowWolf, the office dedicated to finding a cryptid called the Yawlp. That book was so funny, I had to open it. The inside of it was Jason Bourne. Which made me laugh very loudly.

This office was where I learned that I needed to touch everything. I tried to open the drawer because I wanted to see if there was anything hidden in there, and there was! So from that point forward, I touched EVERYTHING and tried to open everything and pushed on everything. Which did lead to me finding a very hidden room that I didn't see another person go into or come out of. MeowWolf out there rewarding curiosity!

There was a couple sitting on this little bench for fifteen minutes, and I really wanted to grab a street photography style photo of them, but I felt weird about it, because there was really nowhere for me to hide. So I just waited for them to leave so I could take a photo of the window itself, which I loved.

Ok, so I REALLY want to talk about this. There was a full room with the words WHEELCHAIR SPORTS CAMP spraypainted on the wall, there was a wheelchair on the ceiling, with prosthetics hanging from the ceiling, as well. There was a door, that went right into a sensory deprivation room that I assumed was for ND folks that need to escape the sensory overload of MeowWolf, and the door was covered...absolutely littered...with photos of activists for the disabled community. And then I saw this in the bus system from Convergence Station, and by the time I saw this, I was fairly irritated by the glaring accessibility issues I had been noticing. So I was curious about the Gang of 19, so I looked them up when I got home, unsure of whether or not this was a piece of "art" for the installation, or a genuine piece of history. Turns out, it was a genuine piece of history:

"Gang of 19" activisits occupy denver instersection to protest inaccessibility on the city's bus system

Which I love, ableism is totally baked into our day to day lives so hard that we don't even realize it, and seeing the activists who put their lives on the line to advocate for themselves and those who would come after them highlighted at an art installation was great.

However.

It rang so fucking HOLLOW, because when I say that there was a whole metric fuckton of shit that Caryn couldn't access because she was in a wheelchair, I mean it. There are elevators around the place to get from level to level, and that's fine, but there were hallways that were too narrow for chair accessibility, there were areas where people wouldn't be able to reach because stairs were the only way in or out (like the office dedicated to finding the Yawlp), and like, how much can disability advocacy highlighting mean if you're not even bothering to walk the fucking walk of the place you built from the fucking ground up? I was pretty god damn irritated about it the entire time I was wandering around eowWolf. It was the biggest detraction from my enjoyment. That being said, Derek and I will be returning because my dad and Caryn couldn't hack it for as long as we couuld, and they wanted to leave. I suppose I will wait and post pictures of MeowWolf when we return on the 10th.

After MeowWolf, we went back to the townhouse, rested for a bit, and then went back to Jinya for dinner. I forrgot my phone, so there are no photos of all of us enjoying our first dinner out together. We went back to the townhouse, dropped Caryn off, and my dad, Derek, and I went grocery shopping. Derek and I saw a massive strip mall full of Asian restaurants, an international grocery store, Mexican grocery stores, Mexican restaurants, we were so excited to explore. We grabbed groceries, headed back to the townhouse, and we all crashed the fuck out. It had been a long day.

Stay tuned for tomorrow, where we go to Hanging Lake with fucking disastrous results.

Forty pounds of wet corn: Colorado Trip, day one and day one, version two

Since moving back to the states from Hawai'i. we've gone on vacation with my dad and Caryn pretty much every years since 2021. In 2021, we went to North Carolina (which I didn't blog about because I wanted to focus my every moment on being with my oldest for the first time since they were 2). In 2022, we went to Ithaca. In 2023 my dad and Caryn came to Missouri, so we didn't go anywhere in 2023. And now, here we are, on our 2024 trip in Colorado. Initially, this trip was supposed to be to Peru, but for many many MANY reasons, we went with Colorado instead.

This trip was to celebrate my 40th birthday (I turn 40 in two months!), and I planned on taking this trip with just me and Derek. It was not meant to be a family trip at all. Not because I don't love my kids and want to spend time with them, but because I don't love my kids and I hate spending time with them.

That of course is a lie. I just wanted to do my own thing for my 40th birthday, it's a big birthday, and sometimes I just wanna be with my husband. The compromise was that I would take this trip way early so I could spend my ACTUAL birthday with my children, and I will get to be with all three of them at Anime Iowa, so yay for that! Circling back, Derek talked me into making the trip a full family trip, sans Laurel because she had a con she would be performing at. It took a lot of cajoling, which does not make me a bad mother, but I finally acquiesced about 6 months ago, and we planned on taking the entire brood. Caryn and I booked VRBOs based on 6 of us travelling, and we're staying at several different places because we're going all through the state. I started to get super amped about taking the kids, because as much as I love doing things without my kids, I also love sharing experiences with them. I was most excited to go to MeowWolf with Rhyann. I thought Alex would be more bored than anything until after the fact, but I knew Rhyann would love MeowWolf. I was excited to take Rhyann to Jinya, me and Derek's very favorite ramen restaurant that we've ever been to anywhere in America (and we have been to a startling amount of ramenries. Ramenerias?). I was excited to take both the kids to Bishop's Castle and Great Sand Dunes. I was just all around into sharing this trip with them. It took convincing, but I got there.

Fast forward to a little under a month ago, in the beginning of May: Rhyann was in a roll-over car accident. They ggot pretty banged up. Concussion, contusions, we were in and out of the ER for a few days because they just could not stop fucking vomiting...which should be a blog entry in and of itself. I am emetephobic, so I am like...nobody's parent if my kids are barfing. Sorry not sorry, but you need to be hyperindependent in that realm when you're my child. I will not cuddle you, I will not rub your back, I will not make you soup. You do not exist until you have been vomit free for three days and you  have gargled all the Lysol on the planet. Those few days were a nightmare for me in every sense of the word. While I know that was also brutal for Rhyann, this is my blog and should be a safe place to center my feelings, and it took every fucking ounce of grit in me to be able to stay with Rhyann at the ER, and manage being in the same home with them and finding compassion to be a present mom, because I am  legitimately afraid of vomit. It is a phobia. Not a dislike, not a gross out, a fucking phobia. Which I full on blame my father for. Getting back on track.

Once Rhyann was out of the scary woods, we had a lot of conversations about whether or not traveling here would be a good idea. I told them I would cancel the trip in a heartbeat if they didn't want to go and they needed me to be home with them. Would I have been disappointed to do that? Absolutely. However, I know how lucky I am as a parent that my child walked away from that accident rather than being rolled away in a body bag, so I would have happily opted to be with them in Missouri if that was what they wanted. In the end, though, Alex also decided she didn't really want to go, and Rhyann vocalized that Alex staying home would be enough, they just didn't want to be alone at home. Whether ot not they meant that and deep down they still would have preferred I stay home and they only said that because they felt guilty about asking me to not go, I may never know. But fast forward again to present day, and here I am, sans kids, just Derek and I, on day three of the trip.

So let's talk about it.

Day one:

We opted to leave a day early and drive to Topeka to shave some time off of our drive. It's a 12 hour drive from our house to the first VRBO, and I just didn't want to leave balls early and be in the car all day. So on Wednesday night, our plan had been to be on the road by 7 to get into Topeka at 11, and rest up for the long drive the next day. Did that happen? Fuck. No. Derek had a bunch of shit he had to do at work, we had a lot of our room left to clean (because Allen will be at the house for a few days while we're gone, staying in our room, which is, by legal definition, a trash heap at the moment), and we didn't actually get on the road until 9:30. I was angry, Derek was tired, it was just a rough night. But we made it, to our hotel that had the veneer of nice, but was heinously uncomfortable.

We have a ritual when we take long car trips: at the start of the trip, as we pull out of our driveway, we play four songs: Also Sprach Zarathustra, which my mom and step dad used to play at the beginning of trips, so it's a holdover from my childhood; Gotta Fly Now; the Toots and the Maytals version of Take Me Home Country Roads; and Age of Aquarius. It's how we start every fucking road trip we've ever taken for the last ten years. As we pulled out of the house to get on our way to Topeka, we both were like....this doesn't feel like the start of our road trip. So we decided not to play our playlist. We made it to Topeka, checked in to the hotel, and went to sleep in our horrible bed.

Day two:

Now THIS felt like the start of our roadtrip, so we played our playlist as we left the hotel in Topeka. And we were in a great mood for the 8 hours to Denver. We talked the entire way there, as we always do, I love road trips with my husband. When we crossed into Colorado, I very legitimately cried. I have missed Colorado. Of course, the back side of Colorado up against Kansas still looks like...well. It still looks like flat, ugly Kansas. But as soon as I could see the rockies, I SCREAMED. I took a fucking shitty picture and sent it to my oldest:

Yay!!! We were still a few hours out, but I was driving when you could REALLY see the Rockies, and Derek was asleep, so I didn't get to take a good picture. But like, I was fucking shocked at just how much snow pack is still on the fucking mountains. Like, Derek and I both were like, woah. No wonder the trail we were going to do was closed off still. Oh, because that was something we had definitely planned on doing...Sky Pond. But the road was just announced as closed for another two weeks due to snow pack, so that put the kibosh on that.

We got to our place in Aurora, and it is just absolutely adorable:

Our host is SO NICE, but my fucking god is that bed uncomfortable. We are staying in the last bedroom photo. The bed is tiny, which isn't so bad, Derek and I sleep pretty fucking close together, so we don't need a lot of sprawl room. But the bed itself is a spring mattress, and fucking yuck. The aesthetic of this place is so cute, though. I wouldn't do a photoshoot here, but it is very photographable. Derek and I got in, cleaned out our shit from the car, and then relaxed, because it was a long ass day of driving. We were, however, excited to go to Jinya for dinner. I just had to go to sprouts first to find some suitable noods that my keto vegan body could manage. I was hoping to find my sea kelp noodles, but no dice. I ended up going with Nu Pasta, because konjac is something I know I can manage. Derek and I did have a massive blowout on the way to Sprouts. We have one every trip we take, and once we got over it, we joked about how good it was to get it out of the way early. Agreed. We got back home and Derek needed to nap, and I had planned on blogging, but instead I took a shower and chatted with my kids a bit before laying down to veg on my phone like the goddess I am. We finally left for Jinya at 8:45, and we couldn't help but notice the incredible storm hovering over Denver on our way downtown. I kept taking shitty videos of the lightning in the clouds, but I finally got a pretty good one:

and I promptly sent it to Rhyann, since that's who I had been taking all of the video for, anyway. I sent a photo of it for good measure:

I was so fucking pleased to be greeted by such a gorgeous cell, and I was more than alittle bit sad that Derek and I couldn't just...hunker down and photograph it as it engulfed the city. But ramen needed to happen. I had cooked my konjac noodles and had them wrapped up in foil in my purse, because that's just what you do.

Y'all. Jinya did not disappoint. I haven't eaten at Jinya since we were in Hawai'i, and I have been craving it ever since. Derek and I talk about it all the time. This one had a bit more ambience than any of the other ones we've been to, but like, you don't go to Jinya because it looks cool.

I dig it, though.

Ramen IS the fucking craze. You are so right, chopsticks.

Derek ordered tempura brussel sprouts, which really left something to be desired. And that something was flavor.

We dipped them in gyoza sauce, but that somehow made them worse. They weren't fried hot enough (they were horribly greasy instead of freshy tempura clean, the way they should be), and they were just...bland. I think the lightness of tempura isn't a good fit for the bold cruciferous fart taste of brussels. Two great flavors, one bad flavor combo.

Derek also ordered his favorite, the Jinya bun:

He loved it, and was like, "oh yeah. That's the taste I've been missing." I should have gotten a picture as he bit into it, the look on his face was pure relief at finding a craving, and joy at eating something delicious.

I ordered my spicy creamy vegan ramen, sans noodles because I was carrying my own noodles in my purse. Derek ordered the not that.

This fucking ramen is so god damn delicious. My biggest qualm is the spinach is just...spinach, and it drags down the flavor. If it had been cooked the way that Derek and I cook yu choy or bok choy, it would have been a serious improvement, but it was still delicious. I wanted to order the spicy flying vegan, but I may get that today for lunch.

Derek's meat filled ramen that he enjoyed every last slurp of:

He ate so much that he had a panic attack on the way home and couuldn't breathe because he was too fucking full of delicious soup.

On our way out, I took a shitty photo of the front of Union Station:

And then we drove home.

Once we pulled into the garage, the storm bore down on us. Hail, thunder, lightning, the works. The best of Colorado Summer Storms, with none of the hail damage because our car was indoors. Hooray!

And now here we are, day three. Which I will blog separately this evening, as we have a REALLY packed day.

Midnight boners at Margaritaville

In a recent conversation about New Orleans with Cabbage (a person, not the cruciferous veg. That shouldn't be a necessary explanation, but like... just in case), she mentioned that she would love to do a ghost tour, and I was like....ooooh, don't talk to me about that, I will ruin your fun times. She said, "ok, I won't talk to you about that, then!" and so for reasons, I of course sent her my blog about the Pharmacy Museum in Nola to highlight how my research ruins at least one New Orleans ghost story.

I was talking to my wifey about this and I mentioned how I do not at all discount that the pharmacy might actually be haunted as fuck, but if it is, it isn't for the shitty reasons that all of the ghost tours talk about, it's because like...sometimes shit is haunted. Or it feels haunted? Or we collectively agree that something is haunted? Sometimes haunted is just a fuckin' vibe, and like...I fuck with that aesthetic.

I have never quite figured out if I believe in ghosts. I have had a lifetime of experiences that I do not understand how to qualify, I have had my husband present for some of them, Amber has been present for one, actually most of my experiences I have no been alone for, which is nice, but also means there's a possibility that what we're dealing with is not so much a haunting, or a ghostie, but rather a group delusion. And let me tell you, I have a history with those. The ghostly kind, specifically.

I have discussed my core friend group in elementary school before: Janice, Daveda, and Tanesha. The besties. But we also had offshoot groups. Janice and Taneesha had their own groups, and Daveda and I had our own group. In our little subsquad was our friend Kim. I am so close to remembering her last name...I think her name was Kimberly Hill? I can remember my other friends...just gonna go ahead and put their childhood names on blast to prove that my brain is a steel trap of useless shit: Janice Nieves, Tanesha Smith, Daveda Maharaj. I decided to look them all up...which is wild, considering we were friends in elementary school and surely they would all be very hard to find...but I found Janice, I found Daveda, and I found so many results for Tanesha Smith that it is impossible for me to say I found her. But two out of three isn't bad!

The more i think about it, the more positive I am that yes, her name WAS Kim Hill, so I tried to find her, as well. And similarly to Tanesha, I had no luck at all. But fuck, apparently neither do other people named Kim Hill who were born in between 1983 and 1985. Lots of those bitches are just straight up fucking dead now. Is she one of them? I have no idea. What sucks is like...Kim had a very recognizable face, because she was born without cartilege in her nose. When those fuckin' dumb ass narcs running DARE came into our classroom to talk to us about how dangerous drugs are, one of the side effects of cocaine they were discussing was degeneration of the nasal passages. A boy in our class named Joey shouted out, "I guess Kim is a cocaine addict!" and almost everybody in the class laughed while Kim sat in her seat crying next to Daveda and myself, who both yelled at Joey to shut up (it is worth noting that NOBODY got in trouble for that. Joey was just...allowed to say that shit to someone in class, and everybody else was allowed to laugh about it. Fuck Mrs. Nathanson, and fuck those cop pieces of shit) and then just kind of like...rubbed Kim's hands flaccidly in some half baked attempt to console her. Is it possible Kim got plastic surgery? Sure. She was made fun of endlessly by our classmates, and I honestly think this is why my friend group was made up of the people it was made up of: all of us were social outcasts for one reason or another.

And I think one of those reasons was we were all fuckin' creepy as hell. Well, we weren't so much creepy as we were always talking about hauntings and shit like that. Weirdos, I think, is the legal term. Though I think we would have been solidly in the zeitgeist now. I bet we would have been MAJOR horoscope girlies.

I wish I wish I WISH I knew how this haunting mass hallucination shit started, but my memory is entirely wasted away, I just know that Kim, Daveda, and myself all started telling a group story about being collectively haunted by a ghost named Sue.

Girl, Sue got AROUND when it came to haunting us, and I never really appreciated how like...Sue, as a ghost, was omnipresent. Sue would hit us all up, on the same night, around the same time, and damn if I don't admire a coordinated effort. Sue was out on those Coconut Grove streets busting myths and stereotypes about ghosts being trapped in one space, except she wasn't. We all made her up. I think? I know I made her up. As I write about this, I think that Kim was the person who initially started talking about being haunted by a ghost named Sue, and I am almost almost ALMOST positive that I, being the fucking diva and hog of the limelight that I am, refused to play second fiddle to a fucking ghost, and I started saying she was haunting me, too, and I think Daveda probably got tired of being left out of story time. So like...maybe poor Kim was leegit being haunted by a dead girl and I was like, OH YEAH ME TOO, SAME GHOST.

I knew I was full of shit, but like, I started to drink my own Ghost Girl Sue Kool Aid and I was seeing signs everywhere. I would come to school armed with stories about how the hair in my bathtub spelled S-U-E, a sure message from this travelling spirit. Honestly, this was the bulk of my encounters with Sue. Just fuckin' hairy remnants left in my bathtub. And honestly, sometimes it was just an S, and if I had to venture a guess, the S hairs was around when I started to think OH MY GOD, I AM BEING HAUNTED BY SUE! In reality, I was just losing a shitload of hair all the time and I think loose strands just naturally want to form S shapes all over the place. Or maybe I'm STILL being haunted by Sue. And so are you. And so are we. Sue is everywhere, we are hers. Or theirs. I don't know Sue. Kim would come to recess ready to talk about hearing Sue whisper her name....and I mean, Sue was whispering SUE, not KIM. Sue was about as amateur hour for a ghost as you get. All she did was whisper her own name, and spell out her own name is fuckin' hair. Kim and Daveda grabbed on to the SUE in hair thing, too. I think Kim was the one of us who saw the word SUE spelled in hair behind her toilet. I don't think that the genius behind that whopper was me, though I wish it had been. One of us also stole some shit straight out of Poltergeist, because there was a ghost at recess story time hour recounting of Sue's ghostly presence coming through the static of a television, though I think...I THINK...all she did was whisper, "Suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuueeeeeeeeeeeeeeee" through the static.

And this shit scared the Bee Jesus (praise bee) out of me. I bought the stories Kim and Daveda told, I bought into my own bullshit, and I was deliciously scared when we had Sue conversations. And I just want to make it clear that this was around the same time that Kim, Daveda, and I had a project together, we decided to  make papier mache, and I fucking ate half the flour mash we used as paste. So like. I was not operating with a full deck of cards.

I don't know how or why we stopped talking about Sue. I wonder if the three of us, Kim with her real haunting, Daveda going in full bore on whatever Kim and I said, me with a belly full of flour paste, ever thought to have a seance? Did we clear our own ghost? Did we end our good fun? Was Kim legitimately being haunted and Daveda and I were low key mocking her without knowing it? Maybe that's why I can't fucking find Kim. Sue devoured her. Slowly, and over time, with strands of hair that spelled out her name. Somewhere Kim is dead under a pile of S shaped hairs. I didn't find an obit with THAT cause of death, but surely it's out there?

I wonder if this is why I am so eager to debunk the ghost stories of others? Perhaps I know my gullibility mixed with my toxic trait of one-upmanship and diva desires will have me going, wait what? You say there's loads of beheaded people moaning and wailing in Leap Castle? NO FUCKING WAY, those same ghosts are hanging out at my house! Look, one spelled its name in hair!

If you're anything like me, and you love to debunk ghost stories, there's this middling book called Ghostland that might provide you more joy than it provided me.

Beebee gun fights in the cemetary

It really wasn't until recently...maybe the last three years...that I returned to dreaming up big scenarios for my life. I have kept myself fairly convinced for the last 21 years and change that I would never amount to anything, because who earns a full ride to Duke University at a young age and then loses it by getting knocked up and dropping out of high school? While success is a subjective term, that isn't really a story you hear much about in circles of people that are considered successful in the broadest of social terms. I kind of just...resigned myself to being nothing. Which is not who I was when I was younger.

Little me had big dreams. I don't know if it's like, a prerequisite of all little kids who are born in prestigous college towns, but being a child of Ithaca, I wanted to go to Cornell University. Well, I mean...kind of. When I was a child, I wanted to be Madonna, and then I wanted to be a Rockette, and any alums are welcome to correct me, but I don't think Cornell offers classes in either of those careers. I think around the age of six was when I landed on being a veterinarian. Someone in my family told me that Cornell had a veterinary program...one of the best in the country...and I wanted that. I wanted that bad. I spent years idolozing Cornell, kind of...assuming that's where I would go? I guess as a kid it's hard to conceptualize ideas like "competitive application process" and "high GPA" as factors in your When I Grow Up daydreams. Especially when adults never tell you that sort of thing until you're in high school, and even then it's used more as like...a cudgel with which to beat you into a perpetual state of fear so you'll actually give a shit about your homework.

Nobody told me that Cornell was competitive, really. If I'm being honest, I'm not terribly sure how much of an interest my parents took in the practicality of my dreams for myself? And I will say for them that I do not think that as an additional layer of them being disinterested, terrible parents...I say that because EVERY MOMENT OF MY LIFE was a daydream. I had plans and ideas for everything I did, every mundane little thing, and I always made them impossibly big. In fifth grade, we had a project where we had to write a small play. Small. SMALL. Starring just us, so really more like a one person show. We had to perform it for the class. I do not know why this was an assignment we had, I just remember that we had it. I think I've written about this assignment before, if only in a small snippet, as this was the first time I was introduced to the word "famished" by another student in my class, and I was obsessed with it. It still rings in my head with exceptionally aggravating echolalic persistence, and it's been...what, 30 years?

Anyway, in my fantasy play, I fashioned myself a dress that made me look like Glinda the Good Witch from The Wizard of Oz, and I would sing Tears for Fears' Sowing the Seeds of Love, and Daveda, Taneesha, and Janice (my besties) would harmonize together as the chorus, dressed in normal clothes because my imagination didn't stretch far enough to make them opulent, I guess. And of course, after my performance everybody would be clapping and would love it...and me....and herald me as a star. Now obviously, the whole fantasy falls down for several reasons, most prominent among them being that wasn't even close to the assignment, singing a song would have given me a big o'l F for not fucking doing a PLAY as I had been asked. When it came time to actually do the play, I was marked down for honing in too far on the details and not offering up anything coherent. Which is fucking harsh criticism, if I'm being honest. I was in fifth grade, and I can't assume she was expecting Lorraine Hansberry levels of storytelling. My play was about cooking a meal in the kitchen, and I will 1000% grant Mrs. Nathanson that I really did lazer in on the minutiae of the scene. I drew a frying pan, and separetely drew an egg, and I spent the bulk of my performance time shaking my drawn pan and drawn egg together in what I perceived as a very chefly action and saying, "sizzle sizzle sizzle".

Given that this was the foundation of reality I was living in at any given moment in my mind, I have to assume my parents and anybody around me understood that injecting even the slightest hint of reality into my fantasies was fruitless, and it was easier to let me dream my little dreams. You know that scene in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory where the last golden ticket has been announced as found, and Charlie's family doesn't wake him up to tell him, they say to just let him sleep and have one last dream, except Charlie is laying awake in his bed and gutted over his hopes being dashed? I bet my family was like the Buckets, except I had absolutely none of the self awareness of Charlie, and lived in a perpetual state of Wonka thought. Wonka like vision with Bucket like accessibility.

All of this to say that I really had no idea what it meant, wholly and truly, to want Cornell University for myself. How could I when nobody told me? I also think another piece of the puzzle is that I had always shown myself to be...pardon the audacity...fucking brilliant scholastically. I was reading at a REALLY young age. Both of my parents have said I started reading at around three, and it never occurred to me that this has always perhaps been less a testament to my genius, and more a testament to their parenting skills? I digress, the point remains that this is the age I was told I started reading. I caught on to concepts exceptionally fast, I was good at memorizing things, I loved learning. As I got older, Magnet schools in Florida were hot on my tail. They wanted in on that sweet, sweet brainy child goodness. So having dreams of Cornell might not have actually seemed all that out of reach, given that I was a brilliant kid, always had been, I was a fucking stupid strong test taker, and really just an all around strong contender for "person who will grow up to be SOMEBODY". I was never really told Cornell was out of my reach.

I made my own Cornell swag. This was how hard I wanted to go to Cornell. I couldn't get access to real merch from the school, but I wanted to transmit my desires in a tangible aesthetic. So. I made my own swag. Back in the 90s, my mom worked at a car dealership where she would occasionally take me in to work with her. And being very bored, I was given access to some of the technically offline computers to play with. One day, I decided to make a Cornell pennant. I wanted to have my own pennant to hang on the wall of my room to look at and use as a daily reminder of where I wanted to go, and who I wanted to be. Cute, right? Fucking adorable. Even cuter when you think about the kinds of printers that were available in the 90s. I tried to make myself a Cornell pennant with a dot matrix printer. Which went about as awry as you would expect it to, it was an impractical ask for that technology. But no biggie, I did my best to make it work. I printed a big ol' letter on each piece of paper...seven pieces of paper in total...taped them all together...colored them in red and white because obviously...and THEN tried to cut it into the pennant shape. Do you know how hard it is to do that? Because I do. And I know how hard it is because I fucking failed at doing it. But that didn't stop me from hanging my homemade pennant on my bedroom wall. I wonder if my sister remembers that? I'll have to ask her (I am asking her right now, and she has yet to respond, but I will update this story as the situation unfolds. Edited to add: she does not remember). This pennant was so fucking ugly, as one must absolutely assume. I'm vaguely artistically inclined, but there really is only so much a kid my age could do with a dot matrix printer, and fine tuning a homemade pennant was not among the items of possible. It was so fucking misshapen, and rough, and I honestly think Cornell would have sent me straight to jail if they ever laid eyes on it, but I had so much love for going there that I kept it up on the wall for a long, long time. I am unsure why I took it down...I actually think it might have been left up for a year or two, until I got wind of Duke being a very real possibility for me, and then I think I did the same thing after getting that full ride, except I learned my lesson and just printed DUKE on a piece of paper per letter. No shaping it into a triangle. See? Smart.

I am currently on the phone with my dad right now asking about my love for Cornell and when it started. He said I was about 6 or 7 when I first stated that I wanted to go to Cornell, so I was mostly correct, just a little bit off on the timeline. My dad told me I was 6 or 7 when I said I wanted to be a veterinarian, and I wanted to get my vet education at Cornell. So, there we go. A bit of clarity.

Back to my lemonade stand style merch: I also made myself a Cornell shirt. I had a white shirt that was way too big for me, probably something I got from my dad's that I just took home, and I used permanent markers to color CORNELL in big, red letters. I do not think I took the time to bother fashioning the letters out in the college font, I think I just wrote CORNELL, unevenly and sloppily, across the front of the shirt in the biggest letters I could spatially reason. I asked my dad if he recalled either of these things, he says he does not. Oh, well. I can still hold out hope that my sister remembers!

I do not think I so much gave up on my dream of Cornell as I traded it in for Duke. I had all of these Magnet programs seeking me out for enrollment, and one of them focused on a pre-law curriculum for students who showed extreme aptitude in cognition and verbal acuity. I am not sure why I didn't get to go to any of these schools, though if I had to hazard a guess, transportation to and from was the issue. My mom had a full time job, and I don't think the magnet schools were very close by, so getting me there and back would have been a huge stumbling block. I am unsure of the timeline here, but I was also invited to take an SAT test at a very young age. I think I was 12 or 13. Young. Way younger than most kids take their SATs. And I scored high as fuck. Way higher than a 12 or 13 year old should have any right to score. I think I scored in the 1400 range, with damn near immacualte scores on everything but math. Math has been, and always will be, my lifelong nemesis. My gut wants to say 1405, but it could have been higher. I just know that after that, I got pegged for all kinds of testing. An IQ test, which I scored really high on (fun note from the past: IQ tests are racist as fuck! Thanks, eugenics, I fucking hate it!), and an invitation to take the college entrance exam for Duke. Except...I've always kind of wondered if this was a fever dream, like...I just have been telling this lie to myself? So I just went on a journey to find out whether or not this was an actual thing. It sure was, it was called Duke TIP, and it's a whole thing that I will unpack another day, because this blog will never fucking end if I do it now, but wow. The program JUST stopped running in 2021, too. Anyway, moving on. I opted to take the ACT instead of the SAT....and I should have been tipped off, pardon the pun, in my memory...that this was a Duke entrance exam and not another SAT/ACT test, because...I mean, it was absolutely a Duke entrance exam of sorts, but not the way that I have always perceived it....I really am going to have to do a whole blog on this Duke mess because I had so much to punpack here. I was supposed to go hiking today and I am STILL at home, hours later, sussing all of this out for a blog I have completely fucking lost the plot of.

Let's get back on track, shall we? Yes. I think yes.

I traded Cornell in for Duke, but Cornell has been a longing in the back of my heart for my entire life. When Derek and I took the kids to Ithaca on our family trip a few years ago, and we went on campus, my soul felt so gloriously at home (and we will unpack Cornell's hideous fucking history at a later time, because for real, I am losing the plot. But I am fully aware of how fucked up Cornell is, and its legacy is awful, and I wish I could train my heart to get over Cornell, but it's so fucking hard). I looked up jobs at Cornell, because Derek said he kind of loved Ithaca and he would be fine moving there when he was done with the army. I found a job there that was perfectly in line with my values and career goals, and I started trying to move my way toward that job. I have held on fast to having some part of something to do with Cornell, because that little girl who made her own Cornell merch because she couldn't get any other access to it would be so proud of us. And being a lifelong fan of the smug uterrance of "I TOLD YOU SO!", I want nothing more than for that little beebee with big dreams of the ivy league to get into Cornell.

I have always dreamed big, because what other way to dream was there? If you're going to imagine something for yourself, even if it can't possibly become reality, fucking go all in. I have lived by that. One of the saddest things in life is when you get dealt a hand that forces you to stop dreaming big, because there is just no point. all it does is further depress your waking life, because reality is so fucking hard and seems so futile that daring to picture a life where you have even one small sliver of sunshine is an absolute soul crushing reminder of how dreams do not come true. I stopped dreaming when I got pregnant with my oldest and realized that I would more than likely be stuck with an abusive nothing of a man that only wanted to knock me up repeatedly and keep me powerless and docile. When I made the hardest decision in the world to leave them behind temporarily to dig myself out of the dreamless hole I was in, and subsequently lost all access to my child for the next 15 years, I remained steadfast in my refusal to dream, because all of my dreams would have been of them. And if you've never lost a child, or lost access to a child, you have no idea how that kind of loss drains you dry. I sent in a postsecret once of a picture of my oldest as a barely two year old toddler, somersaulting in my favorite dress of theirs, in my old angora Kanga bucket hat, that said in big, bold letters, "It is so much easier to make people think you're dead than it is to tell myself the truth. I am so sorry". It hurt too much to dream of a life with them in it, so I didn't bother to dream of any life at all. Fast forward to after I had Alex, and I wouldn't say I started day dreaming of any size to speak of, but I started wanting things for my life again. I left her dad because he was content to stagnate, and I wasn't. I wanted to blossom upward. I got a job, but it didn't have to be serious, I just worked to live and have fun. I was still in my early twenties. I had Rhyann when I was 18, and Alex when I was 22. I held shit jobs that hired me because I was pretty (several employers told me this), I dated nobodies, I had settled into this groove of not blossoming, but tricking myself into thinking I was making progress with myself. I wasn't, but I didn't have to? Your twenties is when you should be figuring yourself out, and I will forever contend that like...my motivations for living life the way I did weren't great, but I still ended up in the right place.

By the time I met Dan, I was at the peak of my fun, carefree bullshit. No prospects, no dreams, but all manner of drugs, alcohol, and batshit fun nights after being a responsible mom all day. Dan essentially negged me into dreaming again, except I wasn't really dreaming for me. I was dreaming for Dan. I will never ever be able to say this with real world certainty, but I think Dan truly thought of me as absolutely worthless except for being a fun way to waste his time in Colorado Springs until he could move on to the real start of his life. A distraction he could fuck, a plaything that wasn't really on his level. I am forced to come to that conclusion because Dan never told his family about me, Dan didn't really tell his friends about me until the death knells of our relationship began chiming (though I was allowed to meet his local friend David, and I think that's about as safe as it gets, since David had no ties to Dan's friends who had a closer spot to his reality center), and even then, I have no fucking idea in what capacity I was mentioned. I was so god damn desperate for Dan's approval that I dreamed up scenarios where I was worthy of his time. College was it. I convinced myself that Dan wanted someone amazing on paper, and that, while Dan always seemed genuinely impressed (and startled, which is unendingly offensive in retrospect) by my intelligence, it wasn't tangible in the way that the first girlfriend of any seriousness he ever told me about after me was. She was a nurse. He told me about her by introducing her as a pretty nurse, which....great for her, love that life...but it cemented the idea to me that Dan wanted someone he could introduce as an aesthetic adjective painted on to a respectable profession. I hadn't been that when we were together, and I have long been certain that was why he didn't love me in a way that felt like love. I enrolled in college to be who I thought he wanted. That was his dream, not mine. I caught on eventually, dropped out of business administration a few credits shy of my BS, and enrolled instead in psychology, the college major of all girls who have relationship damage and sexual trauma. We're a cult, I'm pretty sure.

That was really the beginning of my dreaming again? Not big, but...not nothing. It wasn't until I got accepted for my graduate degree, and was lucky enough to have my oldest back in my life, that I felt ok to dream. And my dreams were getting big. Realistically big, but voluminous just the same. I applied for internships and was praised for the work I've done for my community. I dreamed some more. I wondered about earning my PhD and moving the needle on the liberation movements I have been engaging in over the last six years of my anti-blackness journey. People in my life starting bigging me up, praising my efforts. Even today, when I was talking to my dad, he was telling me he really sees me as the kind of person that will facilitate change in the ways that I see as meaningful. My husband says the same thing. I always brush it off as the rose-tinted glasses of unadulterated love and adoration, but the back of my mind tingles with the "what ifs?" of it all.

When I was awarded my MA with a 3.777 (3.8, if you please. Math has taught me to round, so I will forever round to the nearest tenth), I told myself I was done with academia. I had spent the last two years of my undergrad, and my entire graduate degree, excoriating academia for its white supremacy, heteronormativity, and ableism. Everything I wrote was pointing out the lack of inclusion, the intentionality of baselining entire fields on white, cisgender, able bodied men, and being unrelenting about how fucking much this shit neds to change, and it is sickening to me that academia is intentionally failing billions of people because white supremacy just can't fucking help itself. When I graduated I told my husband, "I am fucking done with academia. I am so god damn exhausted" and I have been luxuriating in the break and free time, but really...my free time is now spent becoming a member of grassroots organizations. Different forms of activism. And I have been wondering, maybe I really do need a PhD to make academia see us. See marginalized identities as worthwhile. And I've been dreaming of how to make that a reality.

And here we are, I didn't lose the plot, I just took a long time to get there.

I have seven programs I am looking at applying to. On a whim, I looked at Cornell to see if they have a PhD program in Human Development, and they do. They do! And I wondered about applying.

When I say I have been going over and over and over applying to Cornell for weeks now, I mean it. I have sent voice messages to my friends. I have talked to my husband about it again and again. I reflect on the little girl I was decades ago, with her makeshift Cornell shirt standing in front of her makeshift Cornell pennant, and I think to myself, "apply. Apply for her".

But...all things being equal...Cornell's program fucking SUCKS. It is so lackluster and boring that it made me want to look into all of the other ivies to see what their programs are like. And I've come to the conclusion that most ivies...you're really only getting the benefit of saying you graduated from an ivy. I told my dad that a PhD from Cornell would be like a skeleton key; it more than likely would open any door for me, and seat me at any table, that I wanted to be at. Is that worth it? In terms of everything I stand for...I have decided that it really is not.

The schools I have chosen as the finalists in my search are, in order:

CU Denver (two programs here, a PhD and an EdD)

Michigan State University

Montclair University (this program is GREAT, but like...it's also in Jersey? Points off for being in Jersey. If it weren't in Jersey, it would be first. And that is not an exaggeration)

University of Wisconsin - Madison

And bringing up the rear, we have Cornell.

The only fucking reason Cornell is on my list is because it's Cornell, and I feel like I owe it to that sad, pathetic, pennant made with all of the love, hope, and optimism that young me had in her bones. I academically lust over Cornell...or at the very least could maybe be coerced into thinking Cornell is hot enough to academically fuck while drunk...because it was the very first dream I wanted for myself. That is proving so hard to let go of, despite knowing that the history of Cornell is as fucked as everything else (but really, what university, aside from HBCUs where I empirically do NOT belong because fucking duh, isn't steeped in mega shitty white supremacy? Shit, even the legacy of HBCUs is steeped in white supremacy, just....in opposition and beautiful defiance of it. Because of it just the same, but...well, yeah. We all know what I'm saying), despite knowing that the Human Development PhD program at Cornell is absolute garbage, and despite knowing that I can get a far more interesting education for far far FAR less money.

I feel like it is not nothing that I could apply to Cornell. Would I be rejected? Swiftly. They have a 13% acceptance rate into their PhD program, and I am sitting amongst the sludge at the bottom of their competitive applicant barrel, but I'm competitive just the same. I also feel like it's not nothing that I fully understand thatI do not want Cornell in an actual, tangible way. Cornell can eat my whole ass academically, because from where I sit, their program cannot hold a candle to fucking MONTCLAIR UNIVERSITY. Montclair. A state school in Jersey gives me more excitement in every way other than longitudinal desire than Cornell, a school that is said to be one of the best in the nation. In what fucking world should that be possible?

I mean...this one, I think. I told my dad that I'm fairly convinced Cornell...along with all seven other ivies...know they don't ACTUALLY have to bring an A game. The name does all of the work for them. People flock to Cornell not for the actual academics, but because of the name (and also it is the easiest of the ivies to gain acceptance into at 13%, with...I think Harvard being next at EIGHT. Eight fucking percent acceptance. No, wait, I think Harvard was 4.4%). Ivy thirsty prestige chasers are gonna go where they can because they want the prestige the name offers, everything else is secondary. Hopw do the academics of Cornell even stack up? I don't care. I think people will say what they want to say about Cornell, and people will say what they want to say about CU Denver not being able to hold a candle to Cornell, and a PhD from CU Denver is a joke if Cornell is even an option. I contend that the program at Cornell is fucking abysmal, and I would be a god damn idiot if I opted for a PhD from a place that doesn't care enough to try and interest potential candidates in any way other than offering up a name. Gag me, but not in a sexy, nighttime kind of way.

I have a meeting with a faculty member from CU Denver coming up, I just don't know when (we are currently working on a time we are both available, since each of us have very demanding schedules). I haven't reached out to the other schools to express interest yet, because I'm trying to whittle it down to three, even tthough...maybe I should leave it at five. I am a top of my class student, but PhD programs are still notoriously hard to get accepted into, so perhaps I should cast a wide net? I don't know what the right move is, but I do know that CU Denver is the school that has two programs I am truly excited at the prospect of, and everything else is second.

The Cornell dream is a ghost. It is persistent, but there, and bothering me in a way that feels unreal. I am on the fence about applying. Derek and I joked the other night that if I actually apply, I should shame them about their boring ass program, their lack of diversity in the specialties of the faculty, and use that as a bullying tactic into getting an acceptance letter. Kinda funny, but I mean...it's all rooted in reality. The program is boring, their faculty is boring, Cornell is fucking dull. I can't determine if I want to apply or not. On the merits of the program, I really cannot say no thank you enough. I understand that the desire is purely to satisfy a long standing itch, and I don't know what to do with that.

I have asked my friends, and results are mixed. Stevie and Bri say I should just leave it to my memory museum as a beautiful little fantasy. Amber and Derek say I should apply, because what if? Would I kick myself forever for wondering and thinking that there is the slightest chance of getting in? Do I feel like fucking around with 105 bucks of an application fee and writing a super tailored statement of purpose to either be swiftly rejected by my dream school, or get accepted to an interview weekend with my dream school, just to say "no thanks, you're actually garbage"?

I think I have no idea what I should reasonably do with a dead dream that I have outgrown. I feel like I keep saying the answer, and the answer is to just...fucking drop it. Cornell was for someone eighteen lifetimes ago who doesn't exist anymore. I am really struggling to do that, though. I suppose the real heart of the matter here is....

Do I really and truly want to apply to Cornell to come full circle on a lifelong dream, or am I just fucking autistic and can't unshake a hyperfixation? I do not know the answer yet.

I'm not getting any hints of hot dog

So, I am officially inquiring into doctoral programs. I have...I think 7 programs that I am currently deciding between. I have inquired to one, which is why I feel like I can say my inquiries are official...I think I needed that dam to be broken in order to feel emboldened to inquire to other ones. I just need to see which ones I am really interested in before applying to others.

This evening, I figured I should put together a go-to package for applications. My resume, a cookie cutter statement of purpose that I can alter as necessary for each program, and of course, my transcripts. I had to go into my student account to get my transcripts, so I logged in, expecting the full hassle of going the long way of showing I completed all of the courses in my graduate program, because it hasn't been updated that I was actually awarded a degree.

It's been MONTHS of me checking to see if it was updated. I even reached out to my advisor in December to ask what the hold up was, and did I do something wrong? She said no, it can take a long time for them to update the system, and I should just sit tight. So I was like, ok, well, I guess it's just waiting forever time.

When I log in to the system today, it's been updated. Big ol' letters with DEGREE CONFERRED TO ONDREA KRYSTINE TUCCI. Master of Arts in Human Development. 2023. And like.

I got very emotional.

It hasn't really been real to me that I did a big thing, and I don't know that I really viewed getting a graduate degree as an accomplishment. It has just been this...thing I kinda did. What is a graduate degree, really? Nothing much. But I think I am starting to understand that I DID accomplish something, and it is for sure an achievement. I started crying, I kept saying "it's real! I really did it, I got a fucking graduate degree". I look at Derek, and he's smiling at me, and he starts rubbing my leg and he says, with all of the earnestness in the world, "honey, you did it! I am so proud of you! And just think," he says to me, as tears are running down my cheeks and I am allowing myself to bask in the praise of my accomplishment, "you are still not good enough for Dan!"

I'm not sure if I laughed so haard because what Derek said is a genuinely hysterical call back, or if I laughed so hard because I am sure it's true, but I definitely laughed loud and stopped crying immediately. What a way to go full circle on my college career, because I really did enroll in college because I thought it might make Dan see me worthwhile, and maybe if I looked as good on paper as he did, he would love me. That clearly did not work, and it was ridiculous of me to think that it would, but I found my way eventually. I enrolled as a business major, trying to follow Dan's bliss as my bliss, hoping fervently that was the ticket to getting him to love me, but when I realized that wasn't the move, I changed courses and ajors to psychology, and I could say I haven't really looked back, but that would be a lie. I got my undergraduated degree...with honors...in psychology, but my last two years were focused on the white supremacy of it all. And then my graduate degree was also focused on the antiqueerness of it all, while using an intersectional lens to shed light on the academic white supremacy of it all. I look back at where I came from all the time, and while I regret my initial intentions, I am pretty pleased with where I ended up. I'm here for me, for the right reasons.

And I have never been more ok with not being good enough for Dan. I hope 2013 me knows how proud of ourselves we'll be in eleven years, and how it doesn't even matter if Dan would even be good enough for us, or if he ever even WAS good enough for us (which I contend he was not). 2013 me should know that we are, and always have been, worthy.

So, congratulations on the face, I guess

So it's been a hot fucking minute since I've had any time or interest in writing in here.

Y'all. This bitch is exhausted. The last 5 months have been the fucking longest 40 years of my life. It isn't all bad exhaustion, just like...general malaise being compounded by depression and feeling overworked. Not because my work forces that on me, I really love my job. But my hours are unconventional, and I feel myself losing time with my amily, and I hate that.

Speaking of losing time with my family, the trip to Nashville was pretty great. I didn't log it the way I do my usual trips, mostly because I wanted to be present instead of curating shit to remember. I let Amber know I wouldn't be exhaustvely documenting our vacation together for that reason, so she didn't feel offended that I didn't do a trip write up. I just wanted to live in the moments we had together, since I see her practically never.

I made her batzina and cucmber salad, we went antiquing, which she had nevr done and that is a must if you're queer, I think. Got harrangued by a lady for wearing masks, acquired another gorgeous beaded purse...I have become osessed with vintage beaded purses. I have a growing collection, and I'm thrilled by them. We got high together and jut talked for hours every night, it was like being kids, but way more fun. Because we had adult money and could do adult stuff. We got our tattoos, and we both had an allergic reaction to the saniderm. Amber's was way mor eunpleasant than mine was, I was pretty worried she was going to end up with her skin rejecting her tattoo entirely. But twenty days later, and we're all healed up. I had intended to take Amber to Nashville for a very fancy dinner at Drusie & Darr, and then we would go to Skull's Rainbow Room for a burlesque show, but on the day of, Amber was like, "ehhhhh....that doesn't really sound fun to me." Was I disappointed? Extremely. I was so fucking bummed about it I wanted to cry, I had really, really been looking forward to that. HOWEVER. The point of the trip was to celebrate not just us as besties for almost 30 years, but Amber's 40th birthday. And if the birthday girl says your birthday plans for them just do not sound like their version of a good time? You don't do it, and you gracefully stay quiet about your disappointment. Because it wasn't an evening about me, it was an evening about celebrating her.

So Amber said she would be much happier staying home and having me make her manicotti, so I did. And I pulled out all the fucking stops for the manicotti. I browned the butter while infusing it with aromatics, THEN I sauteed the onions and mushrooms down in that butter before throwing them into the manicotti mix. I had every intention of making Amber a bechemel to drown her manicotti in, but I ended up making her a gorgeous cheesy garlic bread instead, and forgot to do the bechemel. By the time I remembered, Amber said she didn't care and could do without it. Oops. We got her some coffee ice cream from Talenti, but she didn't end up eating it. Then we watched mmovies and had gummies and had a grand old time.

We went to other antique malls, got hate crimed a bit at one of them (I was admittedly wearing a shit that said SMASH CAPITALISM, announced my queerness, and alerted me as a shoplifter, so maybe I'm partially to blame, but isn't that kind of victim blaming adjacent to say that we got hate crimed because of what I was wearing???), and I found the most amazing dresser that I wanted to buy and flip...I have developed a love of refurbishing furniture and I am currently working on a really gorgeous vanity...but they couldn't get a price to me until it was far too late. Derek and I talked about driving the 6 hours to pick it up the weekend after I got back, but I ultimately decided it wasn't worth it. If I could have gotten the price knocked down a  bit, maybe. There was a LOT of damage, and I would have to really redo a lot of stuff on the dresser. I should inquire and see if it's still there. The drive to Clarksville is actually pretty nice, except for the bridge through Paducah. I had a total and complete panic attack driving over that fucking bridge, I thought I was going to vomit and die. No fucking thank you to that. There is a way to get there WITHOUT going over that particular bridge, but it takes an extra 30 minutes and I missed the turn. :/

I've been home for a little over two weeks, and I've been stuck at home with covid for this week. I am tired, and exhausting my PTO, which sucks, because I will need about 80 hours of it for my trip with Derek, my dad, and Caryn to Colorado in June. I should be ok to earn all of it by then, but I am sure I'll have to use some of it between now and then, but I will legit be on none PTO hours at the end of this week. I'll of course earn a few more with this pay day on Friday, but yikes. I'm low.

I have misplaced Alex's homebound application that her doctor signed off on. I have no fucking idea where it is. It was in the car when Derek and I spent our weekend in STL last week (which was a disaster, sometimes Derek is a truly shitty partner), and now it is nowhere to be found. I am aggravated at myself.

I have nothing else to write about at the moment. I think I'm going to take a nap until my next appointment. Anyway, here's Wonderwall.
